Who ran two 5K’s this weekend? This rookie did!

So I mentioned awhile ago that I have started running regularly, which is ironic because I’m not really good at running.  I always joked that I don’t even run if the police are chasing me.  But here I am, doing my first 5K and then a second one the very next day.  I’ve decided that there’s nothing better than running.  Except not running.  It’s a very twisted love/hate relationship that I have with running.  I’m fully addicted to this supposedly healthy form of self-torture. So let me tell you briefly about my first 5K experience.

I woke up earlier than anyone under the age of 60 ever should.  I put on my cute little running outfit and headed out with my husband to attempt our very first race.  I wanted to run while eating a donut, but that’s not as easy as it sounds.  The race begins, and I was very excited that this was a lot easier than I thought it would be.  Piece of cake.  And then I hit the one minute mark, and it all went to shit from there.  It turns out that I’m not very sexy when I’m running.  I had snot coming out of my nose and I had no idea where to wipe it.  I had spit gathering in the corner of my mouth so I looked like a rabid dog.  And I breathe like Darth Vader on a megaphone when I’m running.  My husband was right next to me the entire time, flapping his jaws like a teenage girl.  I had no idea how he was able to talk so much while running.  I couldn’t talk.  I just kept wondering where the hell the ambulance was.  I would have hitched a ride with the grim reaper himself if it got me to the finish line faster.  Despite all the encouragement from my husband, I had decided this was the first and last race I’d ever do.  Then the race was over, and I had done it!  I finished AND we weren’t last!  I was so excited and couldn’t wait to do the 5K the next morning.  See, I told you…”love/hate”.

That night was my cousins 21st birthday, HAPPY BIRTHDAY NOLAN, so we went out bar hopping and although I did not drink a lot, I still got very little rest for my next race.  It’s only 5K, but that’s a million miles to me at this point.  That being said, we still shaved off two minutes on our second race, and again did not finish last!

I have a long way to go still, mostly I need to work on my breathing, but I’m having a blast and I know one day I’ll be where I want to be with this.  In the meantime, I’m happy to report that my ass is like two inches higher than it was last week.

Also, a big loud Happy 9th Birthday to my daughter, and Happy Birthday to me!

  1. Happy birthday to you both, my sweethearts! You have inspired me to walk maybe 5 or 10 minutes a day.

    Love,
    Mom
